George W. Bush Victory Bill Novelty Money Bill # 212
This Limited Edition bill commemorates President George W. Bush's re-election victory in 2004, in which he won both the Electoral College and the Popular Vote.
George W(alker) Bush, born in 1946, 43rd president of the United States
(2001- ), first took office in 2001 following one of the closest and most
disputed elections in U.S. history. When he took office, Bush, son of former president
George Herbert Walker Bush, became the first son to follow his father into the White House since John Quincy Adams followed
John Adams in the early 19th century. Bush, a Republican, was also the first presidential candidate
since Benjamin Harrison in 1888 to win the electoral vote, and thus the presidency, while losing the nationwide
popular vote. Bush lost the popular vote to Democratic candidate Al Gore by more than 500,000 votes out of more than
105 million votes cast nationwide. However, he secured a 271 to 266 victory in the electoral college when, after five weeks of legal
wrangling, Gore failed to overturn election results that gave the state of Florida, with 25 electoral votes, to
Bush. As president, Bush launched a war against terrorism after the devastating terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. Bush was reelected
in 2004, defeating Democratic opponent John F. Kerry by sweeping the South and
winning the key battleground state of Ohio. This bill commemorates Bush's
reelection with 286 electoral votes over Kerry's 251 (270 needed to win), and
approximately 50.7% of the popular vote to Kerry's 48.3%, a difference of more
than 3,000,000 votes out of the 122,000,000 votes that were cast. The back
of the bill shows Mount Rushmore, with the likenesses of George Washington,
Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.
