Attack on Pearl Harbor

Novelty Money Bill # 092

Early on the morning of December 7, 1941, Japanese
submarines and carrier-based planes attacked Pearl Harbor without warning, propelling the USA into World War II.

Pearl Harbor, a Pacific Ocean inlet of the island of Oahu, Hawaii, about 6 miles (10 km) west of Honolulu, is the site of one of the principal naval bases of the U.S.  In 1887 Hawaii granted the U.S. the exclusive use of the harbor as a repair station, and in 1908 a naval station was established.   In 1941, the Empire of Japan formulated plans to conquer Pacific rim islands, but feared that the U.S. Pacific Fleet could intervene and thwart their plans. So, Japan devised a plan to cripple the Pacific Fleet.  Early on the morning of December 7, 1941, Japanese submarines and carrier-based planes attacked the harbor without warning.  In a raid lasting less than two hours, four American battleships were sunk, four more were heavily damaged, and 10 other naval vessels were sunk or badly damaged. Almost 200 American aircraft were destroyed, and approximately 3000 naval and military personnel were killed or wounded.  The next day, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, addressed a joint session of the U.S. Congress concerning December 7, 1941, which he called "a date that will live in infamy."  In asking Congress for a declaration of war, Roosevelt further said, "No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory."  The Front of the Bill contains this famous quote by President Roosevelt, as well as a picture of the president.  The Back of the Bill pictures a collage of the carnage the Empire of Japan's attack wrought on the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

Operation Desert Storm (The Liberation of Kuwait)

Novelty Money Bill # 205

Our Operation Desert Storm bill commemorates the removal of Iraqi forces from Kuwait in 1991

Our Operation Desert Storm bill commemorates the removal of Iraqi forces from Kuwait.

In August 1990, Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein invaded neighboring Kuwait and took control of 24% of the world's oil supplies. It seemed as if his next target was oil-rich Saudi Arabia.  The invasion triggered a United States response, Operation Desert Shield, to deter any invasion of Saudi Arabia.  On August 7, deployment of U.S. forces began.  On August 20, U.S. President George Bush outlined U.S. objectives - which included the "immediate, complete, and unconditional withdrawal of all Iraqi forces from Kuwait," and the "restoration of Kuwait's legitimate government to replace the puppet regime installed by Iraq."  A United Nations ultimatum on November 29, 1990 stipulated that if Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein did not remove his troops from Kuwait by January 15, 1991, a U.S.-led coalition was authorized to drive them out.  Early in the morning of January 17 (Iraqi time; January 16 in the U.S.), the U.S.-led coalition launched air attacks against Iraqi targets.  On February 24, coalition ground forces began their attack.  On February 27, Kuwait City was declared liberated, and with allied forces having driven well into Iraq, President Bush and his advisers decided to halt the war.

U.S. Civil War (A Nation Divided)

Novelty Money Bill # 021

The U.S. Civil War, also known as the War Between the States, was a conflict between the U.S. Federal Government and 11 Southern states that fought to secede from the Union.

The U.S. Civil War, also known as the War Between the States, was a conflict between the U.S. Federal Government and 11 Southern states that fought to secede from the Union.  It arose from several issues, but primarily a dispute between States Rights vs. Federal Rights. When the Southern states seceded, they were organized as the Confederate States of America, under their president, Jefferson Davis, while the Northern states were led by their newly-elected president, Abraham Lincoln.  The war began on April 12, 1861 in Charleston, S.C. when Confederate artillery fired on Fort Sumter. Northern military forces were led by General Ulysses S. Grant, and the Southern military forces were led by General Robert E. Lee.  Lee surrendered to Grant on April 9, 1865 at Appomattox (Virginia) Court House.  The mortality numbers were staggering; about 620,000 deaths out of a total of 2.4 million soldiers (25%).   The Front of the Bill pictures President Lincoln.  The serial number of the bill is the year the civil war began (1861) and the year it ended (1865).  The Back of the Bill features a picture of a civil war battlefield between pictures of General Grant and General Lee.  (Interesting Note: Ulysses S. Grant, who later became the 18th president of the U.S., was born Hiram Ulysses Grant, but changed his name, because he did not like his monogram, HUG).

World War I

Novelty Money Bill # 211

This Bill commemorates World War I, also known as The Great War, described as the War to End all Wars.

World War I, also known as The Great War, was described as "the War to End all Wars."  Beginning in 1914, the war lasted until 1918, and significantly changed the way wars were fought.  The Front of the Bill depicts a soldier with a machine gun and the words Trench Warfare. Trenches were first used successfully in World War I, and in fact caused a stalemate on some fronts due to the inability to penetrate the trenches. The Back of the Bill shows a Mark I tank, first used successfully in battle in 1916 by the British. Also pictured is the first all-metal plane of the war, the Junkers bi-plane, produced by the Germans in 1918. Heavy, large-caliber artillery guns were employed by both the Allied Powers and the Central Powers due to the stalemates created by trench warfare.  Order your collector's copy of this historical bill today!

World War II

Novelty Money Bill # 084

World War II, or the Second World War, was an international conflict from 1939 to 1945 between the Axis Powers (Germany, Italy and Japan) and the Allied Powers (Britain, FraNMe, the U.S., and the Soviet Union).

World War II, or the Second World War, was an international conflict from 1939 to 1945 between the Axis Powers (Germany, Italy and Japan) and the Allied Powers (Britain, France, the U.S. and the Soviet Union).  Political and economic instability in Germany, combined with bitterness over its defeat in World War I and the harsh conditions of the Treaty of Versailles, allowed Adolph Hitler and the Nazi Party to rise to power in Germany. Hitler was appointed chancellor in 1932 and in 1933 made himself Dictator of Nazi Germany.  Hitler secretly rearmed Germany in violation of the treaty.  He signed a pact with Italy and Japan to oppose the Soviet Union, and then began invading other smaller countries.  His invasion of Poland and the  unwillingness of other European nations to stop Hitler with force encouraged him to continue his aggression.  Finally, in 1939, France and Britain declared war against Germany.  The U.S. was brought into the war on December 7, 1941 when Japan attacked the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.  Germany surrendered on May 8, 1945 and Japan surrendered on September 2, 1945 after two atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the U.S.  Military and civilian casualty figures vary from 35 million to 60 million.
